January Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Jim Lord for being named the January Athlete of the month. Jim is a regular at the 5:30 am class. He consistently works hard, continues to improve his health and fitness, and motivates others in the class with him. He has been doing CrossFit for a long time and he still continues to work on moving better. We appreciate him in our morning group!

Please tell us about yourself.

I was born in Glenwood Springs December 1971. I grew up in the valley for most of my life, but spent some time in Alaska and Idaho as well. I went to high school in Rifle Colorado. I met my wife Kelly freshman year in high school, we started dating junior year in high school. Hi school sports were wrestling and football junior and senior year. I then went to college in Gunnison at Western State college and was lucky enough to play football there as well. Kelley and I married our junior year in college. After college moved back to New Castle where we have raised our two children Kolby and Kaden.

When did you become a member at Defiance West?

I became a member of Defiance West when it first opened in New Castle. I was part of the prior gym before Defiance West opened.

What made you join Defiance West and why do you do it now?

I feel that Cory and Cierra along with the other trainers really know what they are doing when training. I really enjoy the community and the friendships I have developed in from the gym. I needed the accountability.

What were your thoughts after your first workout?

Loved it and hated it. My second day we did the workout Murph. I was happy to get through it but could not move for a week after.

What is your athletic background?

Wrestling and football as far as school related sports. I am also into most outdoor activities like snowboarding and mountain biking but have really gotten into surfing behind our boat the past year. It is something we can do as a whole family.

What is your favorite movement or workout?

Not sure I have a favorite.

What is your least favorite?

Thrusters and burpees.

What has been your favorite moment?

Proudest moment was my first muscle up.

How has Defiance West changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?

I feel like I am getting stronger all the time. It has made me focus more on other aspects of my health as well such as eating better and drinking more water.

What are your fitness goals for this year?

I want to see some abs again.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

Kelly and I were born on the same day, same year and only eight minutes apart. And no, we are not twins haha.

What advice would you give to people looking to get started at our gym?

Try it you’ll love it.
