February Athlete of the Month
Congratulations to Rob Glassmire for being named Athlete of the Month for the month of February. Rob consistently shows up to the gym, works hard, he is interested in learning more about the movements and improving, and he always pushes himself.
Rob has been a great example of working through an injury and has shown us all how much that paid off. He broke his leg last year skiing but he continued to come to the gym and he has come back stronger than ever. Thank you for being a great example to all of us Rob!
Please tell us about yourself.
I grew up in Kalamazoo Michigan and moved to Colorado in 2000. A few years later I met my wife and Keri, started a family and settled in New Castle. We love New Castle! The open space, trails, and community is great.
When did you become a member at Defiance West?
November 2017
What made you join Defiance West and why do you do it now?
Keri had joined for one month in early 2017, then returned around September/October 2017. While Keri was at a 9am class, I was trying to jog a mile and doing poorly at it. Keri had been trying to get me to join for a few weeks. In November 2017 I tried and loved it.
What were your thoughts after your first workout?
It reminded of a workout I would have done in the Marine Corps. The only thing I remember is sandbag runs and being really sore the next day. I loved it!
What is your athletic background?
I’ve been an avid alpine skier since childhood. I’ve participated in high school football, baseball, and other organized sports. Since joining Defiance West, I have completed one full marathon and two half trail marathons.
What is your favorite movement or workout?
I’m not sure I have a favorite. I like many of the movements including wallballs, rowing, and outdoor exercises. I feel most accomplished after completing a workout with a lot of burpee box jump overs.
What is your least favorite?
Anything where my hands have to go over my head, specifically overhead squats.
What has been your favorite or proudest moment since joining?
Being named athlete of the month. It’s an awesome honor!
How has Defiance West changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?
My overall fitness in the last two years has surpassed any expectations. My ability to move is greater now than it has been in for most of my adult life. I also pay more attention to diet and overall wellbeing.
What are your fitness goals for this year?
Family fitness! Instilling good diet, outdoor activity, and other good exercise habits in our kids’ routines will promote a healthy lifestyle in our home and help us all.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
When I was 21, I backpacked in Hawaii for a month.
What advice would you give to people looking to get started at our gym?
Be humble, stay committed and you’ll find that it is a great experience and worth your time.
